"Clarity is kindness. By being upfront about what we do and don't provide, we help youth get the right answers faster."

Over the last 90 days, our helpline handled 961 interactions. Here is how we are pairing high availability with absolute transparency.

Over the last 90 days, our helpline handled 961 total interactions, translating to roughly 62 hours of direct phone conversations and text messaging with youth, donors, and community members. Volume steadily ticked up from 294 contacts in June to 336 in August.

How People Are Reaching Out:

- Live Phone Calls: 465 (48%)

- Google Voice Texts: 287 (30%)

- Voicemails: 123 (13%)

- Hang-ups: 86 (9%)

Text messaging continues to be a vital touchpoint for younger folks checking drop-in hours or available gear quickly, while voicemails mostly capture after-hours inquiries regarding emergency shelter and rent assistance.

Who's Calling & What They Need:

- Eligible Youth (28 and under): 13% of interactions (126 total), reaching out for basic needs like food, ID assistance, and bus passes in chats averaging 6 minutes.

- Older Adults & Out-of-Scope Requests: Requests for direct cash, overnight shelter, or callers over 28 make up 75% of our total interaction time (486 chats).

- Donors & Volunteers: 21% combined, coordinating supplies and support.

Clarity is Kindness: Setting Expectations Early:

Because we operate as a daytime resource center rather than an overnight residential shelter or cash assistance program, we focus heavily on warm referrals. In 88% of out-of-scope interactions, we connect callers directly to 211 or local housing navigation networks.

To make life easier for callers and staff alike, we've updated our systems:

- Recorded Greeting (IVR): Instantly informs callers of our age parameters (13–28) and our scope regarding cash and housing assistance.

- Website Clarity: Clear notices right on our new website (connect.symin.org) so visitors know exactly what services are available on-site.

By pairing high availability with transparent boundaries, we ensure every client feels confident reaching outβ€”knowing they will be heard and pointed toward real solutions.
